Texture Grid

I particularly liked this grid because of the texture of my cat's fur, as well as the way  I was able to organize the pictures into diagonals.

Pictorialism

Photo Taken By: Edward Steichen

The Pictorialist photographers believed normal photography was not art, because an invention was creating the photo, not a person. To make photography into a true art form, the Pictorialists would put vaseline on their camera lenses or chemicals on the photos. This created the effect seen in these two photos, causing them to look almost like paintings rather than photographs. I like this style because it's so different from most photos I see, which are in sharp focus and have bright colors. The soft effect of Pictorialist photos is interesting to me, and gives the photos an old-fashioned feel.

Framing Slideshow

I really enjoyed this assignment because I was able to photograph anything I wanted, in several different locations. Whether I was at the Farmer's Market, Washington Park, Gearhart, or my backyard, I was able to find interesting subjects. The requirement of  using certain techniques also taught me to look for new ways to photograph my subject, and create a dynamic photo.

Framing Assignment

Bug's Eye View

This photo was taken at Washington Park. I love the lighting, and the shadows the leaves make on one another. It took me awhile to find the position that would allow the right amount of sunlight to filter through the branches, but taking the extra moment to do so definitely paid off.

Bird's Eye View

This photo was taken on the beach in Gearhart, Or. Mostly, I like the story behind this picture, though I am proud of the picture itself. It was incredibly windy and starting a fire seemed impossible, but we managed. Honestly, it was insanity, with sand and bits of burning newspaper blowing everywhere. I meant to capture that sense of chaos, but once I looked through the camera lens an entirely different scene appeared. I love the bronze-y color created by the flames, and how well the fire, feet, and roasting marshmallow go together.

Foreground Elements

This photo was taken at the Farmer's Market near Portland State University. I love these bright colors, and the sharpness of the peppers in the foreground contrasted with the less focused background.

Inspirational Works of Others

I love this photo because it captures the relationship between the old man and woman. It isn't posed or forced, but shows a candid moment. I also like the contrast between the bright colors in the sun, and the darkened colors in the shadow.

The detail in this photo is what really caught my attention. It's also a really powerful shot, even with its simplicity, because the woman is looking directly into the camera.

I love the contrast between the height of the trees and the height of trees. The pathway also draws your eye forward, and adds depth to the picture.

Self Portrait

This was taken as a last minute attempt to capture an indoors photo with good lighting and an unobtrusive background, a difficult feat when in a high school. I jumped in front of a narrow strip of brick wall next to a corner filled with massive windows, and ended up getting my favorite photo of the self-portrait project.
